Chase was hired by Greg Steltenpohl to design branding and packaging for his new entrepreneurial beverage venture which would produce a line of fresh, healthy beverages including juices, probiotics and nutmilks. The “Made in California” theme was an important aspect of his plans for production.
The natural foods category is crowded with alternative dairy products so the new brand needed to immediately differentiate itself from the competition. Designing for the natural food market was the first step, but Greg wanted to grow beyond natural foods retailers to include the mass market without losing his natural food equity.
Capturing the wholesome essence of Califia’s products meant finding a simple, earnest expression for the product line. The iconic shape of vintage milk bottles became a key inspiration for package shape and graphic development.
The Califia name comes from the Spanish legend of a warrior queen Califia who ruled over a kingdom on the mythical island of California. The Califia logo brings this mythology to life by depicting Califia as a goddess of bountiful goodness.
Califia Farms’ instantly iconic brand and packaging now symbolizes quality and great-tasting alternatives to traditional dairy products and juices. The brand has successfully grown beyond the natural foods market and now includes mass retailers Target and Costco.
