The assignment was to create an all-type book jacket. Using the background of the story, creatively design a concept that will give the reader an idea of what the mood and story-line of the book. I chose to create my own filler instead of using an existing book in order to get the exact size and folds I was looking for.
Go Tell It On The Mountain is a spiritual/ coming of age novel written in the language of the King James Bible. The main conflict of the book involves a pastor and his son and their religious struggle as they battle racial discrimination.
That being said, I wanted the book cover to resemble a King James Bible, drawing mainly from the spine of the book. I decided to use black to represent African Americans in darkness during slavery. The book cover is gold to show light in the midst darkness, which is exactly what the gospel (and the main character) embraces.
I took a risk using techniques i've never tried before and it paid off. I learned something new and that is always a positive result.
