Create a typographic poster that evokes the work of an artist and his/her movement. The artist I chose was Christo, and the movement his work belongs to is Nouveau Réalisme.
Approach
Christo's work is tactile and experiential, so I had the letters laser cut out of wood and began playing with them as blocks, photographing them from different angles, wrapping them with cloth and twine to mimic his early works. To capture the ephemeral quality of Christo's wrapped sites, I experimented with sheer fabric and light, together with the letter blocks to create an illusion of movement and concealment.
Results
By forcing myself to use tools other than the computer, I had to develop a unique process for this challenge. Through having a goal and personal restrictions, I was able to work with alternate mediums, develop a targeted solution, and learned to play as a form of exploration.
