Assignment
Create a poster to help tell the story of the diversity of soldiers that fought at Gettysburg during the American Civil War. Research the soldiers that served during the 3-day battle of Gettysburg. Finding one soldier of hispanic descent that earned American Military’s highest distinction, the Medal of Honor. Joseph H DeCastro is the first hispanic to earn this medal.
Approach
The poster design is inspired by etchings of different eagles from different kinds of military documents such as promotions, commissions, and the like. After scanning several documents, one image stood out that symbolized DeCastro’s roll as guidon bearer and the look of bravery needed on the battle field. The typography is purposefully Victorian because that is the type style popular in 1863 America. Additionally, a new citation description was written to reflect more accurately this soldiers heroism.
Results
The client was very happy with the results and is now part of the Gettysburg National Military Park permanent archive.
