The Alabama Bicentennial Commission engaged Tatum Design to create an initiative that would honor our state and encourage statewide travel during the Alabama Bicentennial celebration. The initiative would set the tone for the entire statewide celebration, so we set out to bring to life Alabama history like never before.
We named, branded and designed the entire PastPort initiative experience. We wanted every county in the state, big and small, to be celebrated equally. Inspired by historical people, places and events, we designed custom artwork and wrote lively narratives for all 67 counties. We thought through every detail of the experience — the printed book, the digital app, posters, wearables and the on-site experience. Every element was designed to capture imagination, spark conversation, and promote tourism across Alabama. We crafted an immersive brand that would allow people of all ages to personally connect with Alabama history and chronicle their adventures at stamp sites within every county as they explored our state.
Our client, the Alabama Bicentennial Commission, represented an array of citizens from governmental officials and tourism board members to historians and archivists. Everyone involved was overjoyed with the final product. The response has been so tremendous that Alabama schools are now using the PastPort as part of their fourth grade Alabama history curriculum during the two year celebration.
