The narrative then moves the story through the building of the city, the arrival of the movie stars and on to the creation of the city as we know it today. All done in a way that gives the reader a "behind the scenes" look at the seminal events throughout the city's history.

The book was created by incorporating vintage snapshots with new color photographs to illustrate the span of 100 years, from dust-covered bean fields to celebrity mansions. In some cases direct comparisons of a location were shown through these images. The difficulty of representing all the aspects of a city—education, politics, architecture, business, and lifestyle was made easier by separating everything into relevant chapters and using the images and the rich narrative to bring the story to life.
