Using the infographic technique of mapping, we can explore track, trace, and form connections using data in the health field. Symptoms indicate the presence of disease, but we still need to understand what combination of symptoms indicate which disease. It is easy to become overwhelmed with an excess of information and to jump to incorrect conclusions. The Symptom Index looks to alleviate that problem by providing a way for users to identify all the possible illnesses that could be causing their symptoms.
Symptom Index is an interactive health infographic that allows a user to begin to identify an illness based on its symptoms. The idea generated from the many overlapping symptoms that COVID-19 has with other common illnesses. The design places the patient at the center and allows the user to drag and drop any symptom to narrow down the possible illness present. It was important to allow the user to see all the illnesses that had the same symptom to allow them to be aware of all the possible outcomes. A user can also search in the opposite direction by selecting one illness which highlights all the possible symptoms attributed to that illness. This allows a user to search in whatever way makes sense to them. The system was designed to always make all possible outcomes visible to avoid causing fear.
The system created puts the user at the center as they are the most important part of the process and allows them to always be aware of all possible diagnoses. This format achieves its goal of giving the patient more actionable and accurate information. It provides them with the overarching possibilities and allows them to rule illnesses out based on their current symptoms. It also allows users to search and interact with the system in any way they are most comfortable, whether it is adding symptoms to see which illness fits those symptoms or selecting illnesses and seeing if the symptoms match theirs.
