The client, Tokyo Nikikai Opera Foundation, is the largest opera production in Japan. Set in the Spanish court of the 16th century, this masterpiece composed in Verdi’s mature years embraces diverse themes such as love, politics, and friendship, which evolve into melancholy but grandiose drama.
The design embeds the images of characters which blend into the background adopting Akzidenz-Grotesk to visually represent their intertwined paths to self-destruction. With typography woven into the interlaced curvy and sharp lines, flowing contours reflect the feeling of anxiety and tragedy to visualize this grand story. Based on the fact that this is an opera which was originally written in French, France-origin Didot was adopted for title font. The contrast between modern visuals and the classic look of the title creates a subtle tension, giving a sharp touch to the overall impression.
This mysterious design was well-received by the audience: almost all spectators purchased the leaflet which had this image as the cover.
