Each day for 70 days I selected a personal or public domain image and used it as a visual prompt in designing a unique letterform. When completed, I compiled all the letterforms into a book, showing them alongside the original prompt. The goal was to create a visual diary of my typographic experiments. I also created promotional materials for a museum exhibition of the work. Included here are the highlights of the 70-day experiment, with the uppercase alphabet and numbers as well as additional applications.

At the beginning of the project, I found myself trying to capture the overall look of each reference picture through the letterforms in a direct, literal sense. As I progressed, I found it much more interesting to focus on small details in the images, reducing them down to their most basic gestures and using these as my reference points. This gave me more interpretive freedom, and made the relationship between the images and letterforms more engaging, like a puzzle to be solved by the viewer.

I found many of my experiments with the letterforms to be very successful, while others are perhaps not fully resolved. However, I resisted the temptation to go back and adjust them once the 70 days were over, preferring to let things stand as a transparent record of my progression and improvement with type design over this period.
