Assignment: Describe Project and Goals The assignment was to create an image-oriented poster that reflects a social, cultural, or political issue of personal choice.
Approach: Creative Process and Solution The poster brings attention to ongoing problems in the U. S. dairy industry regarding the unethical treatment of cows. Today, the average cow artificially produces more than four times as much milk as a cow did in 1950. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture, 16.5% of cows used for their milk suffer from a painful inflammation of the udder, one of the leading causes of death for adult cows in the dairy industry. The resulting image uses the visual cue triggering an empathic reaction over spilled milk. In this case, the symbolic image of a cow and the words “ditch dairy” force the viewer to reframe the message in a broader context.
Results: Project Success and Client Reaction The poster received praise for its symbolic treatment of an otherwise complicated subject matter and for demonstrating aesthetic excellence.
