The word “travel” always makes one think of where they’re going, but in the November/December 2018 issue of Afar they wanted to ask “Where is travel going in the future?”. Tara Guertin reached out to us with the task of envisioning what travel could look like in the years to come, and we jumped at the chance to bring it to life.

Since we were working on images for multiple stories, including the cover, we wanted to keep a consistent color palette and style. Bright, poppy primary colors provide the zip, and mixing some slight vintage elements in props and wardrobe in with glints of silver and white help push the future angle without it looking like a sci-fi movie from the 1950s. We wanted the images to be a quick read conceptually but with a beautiful look and feel to keep the reader on the page a little longer.

In the world we created, the future is truly so bright you gotta wear shades! Tara and the rest of the Afar team were thrilled with the final images, and they have made a colorful splash on the newsstand.
