Alchemy, a magazine of student writing and art, is published annually as a class project by the students of Writing 246 and Writing 249 at Portland Community College. This cover was designed and submitted for their 2021 magazine print.
Alchemy means "a seemingly magical process of transformation, creation, or combination." Staying away from general stereotypes of what most picture when they thing "Alchemy" (ie. magic, cauldrons, wizards, etc.) I wanted to create a jacket cover that represents transformation as a metaphor to both the word "Alchemy" and what this last year has been like for our world—being stuck inside, and yearning to be outside. The submission to this journal will be from students and authors who are writing their stories while in quarantine.
This design successfully communicated the idea of transformation while being thought provoking and intimate in it's aesthetic and color choices.
