When Carl Nassib became the first active NFL player to come out as openly gay the NFL wanted to not only make a show of support, but plant a flag for what they believe: Football is for everyone. For far too long, football has been perceived as being watched and played by only one type of person. However, football is for everyone. And everyone is invited to the game.
Nassib’s statement came with no warning, so we had a matter of days to create something of impact. Just as Carl Nassib changed football culture with a few simple words, we wanted to do the same. That is where the inspiration to lead with a simple, yet powerful statement of “Football is gay,” came from. As the message was celebratory we scored the simple execution with an upbeat football inspired percussion track and had the concept done within 48 hours.
The film received an outpouring of love as major brands, NFL teams and Carl Nassib himself commenting on the post. News channels, pop cultural shows and blog also reported on the film. As with all major cultural changes it also met its fair share of hate. That’s how we knew we made an impact.
