The assignment was to create stamps that would appeal to sports fans, stamp collectors, and first-class mail users, who wanted something a little different. The objective was to create a novel and playful stamp pane to celebrate America’s love of sports.
The design team chose to feature round stamps with colorful, stylized illustrations of some of America’s favorite sports balls with a textured surface unique to each ball. During the printing process select areas of each stamp were given a special coating, creating those textures: baseball’s stitching; golf ball’s dimples; tennis ball’s seams; soccer ball’s and volleyball’s textured panels; and different raised patterns for a football, basketball, and kickball.
Stamp collectors, stamp users, and sports fans were delighted with the new stamp effect and the fun, colorful depictions of sports balls. Eight months after issuance more than 40 million stamps had been sold.
