The assignment was to design stamps to celebrate the magnificence of sharks. The challenge was to illustrate the unique adaptations that equip sharks to reign as the top predators in the marine food chain while capturing their mystery and beauty.
Using undersea photographs and the guidance of shark experts, the artist created clear, realistic depictions of sharks in action. The blue background deepens as one looks down the pane, an effect suggesting inky waters barely penetrated by sunlight.
Shark lovers were particularly enthusiastic about the stamp issuance. After only six months, nearly 70% of the 40 million stamps produced were sold.
