The Community of Scholars brochure recognizes the creative and intellectual accomplishments of faculty at the University of Portland. It is used internally and externally, both as a way to highlight faculty and to inform prospective faculty about the achievements on campus. Deans send the brochure to anyone requesting more information about UP, and the brochure is displayed within the admissions office. The Provost also mails the brochure to presidents and provosts at other Western Regional universities for voting on rankings in “U.S. News & World Report”.

The Scholars brochure consists of three sections—Awards and recognitions, a highlight of University of Portland’s achievements for the year; faculty profiles featuring a select group of faculty; and the scholarly review, a listing of the hundreds of articles, books, research papers, and creative works generated by UP faculty.

The front section features large, full-spread images overlaid with short, quick-read information about institutional awards and recognitions, campus expansion and improvement projects, student body statistics, and student and alumni achievements.

The middle section features select faculty members who are recognized for their achievements inside and outside the classroom.

The last section is a listing of works within the Scholarly Review. This section is inherently dense and long, and is made more open and readable by breaking the text-heavy pages with larger paragraphs of various featured work.

The brochure was used to help University of Portland achieve a ranking of 2nd out of 113 institutions for Best Colleges in Regional Universities West by “U.S. News & World Report”. This ranking went up from 6th out of 127 institutions in the same category during the previous year.
