The assignment for this project was to take an existing item, in this case Q-tips, and create a new brand and packaging for that product. For this project I wanted to market the product as a higher end brand and provide packaging with multiple functions to ensure an optimized user experience.
I developed the brand Angora, named for the angora rabbit. The rabbit was chosen as my brand icon not only due to the animal's physical resemblance to cotton swabs but also because it helps invoke the feeling of softness and luxury customers should experience with this brand. The secondary elements consist of cotton illustrations to promote the all natural, high quality materials used, as well as solid lines to break up the cotton pattern and provide continuity and organization within the box. I then created a dieline for a small travel sized container that when the front was opened would allow for easy access to cotton swabs on the go. Additionally if folded in half it turns into an open container perfect for storing cotton swabs on a bathroom counter. The primary difficulty I faced with this design was ensuring that the packaging was cohesive across all of its sides with no text or images upside down in both its folded and travel forms. Finally I created a larger matching box which holds five of the smaller boxes, for bulk purchasing.
Overall the project was a success. The brand is distinct, inviting, and has the premium feel I was aiming for. The box itself is both physically attractive and highly functional. Its slim, easy to access travel form as well as its open container form are both visually pleasant enough to elevate the space and be useful on any bathroom counter.
