My portrait work has often referenced the paintings of the Dutch Masters. In this case I'm working with a ruff or millstone collar, often shown in the master's paintings. The collar was a fashion accessory in the mid-16th to mid-17th centuries. The stiffness of the garment forced upright posture, and their impracticality led them to become a symbol of wealth and status.
