With the 2019 holiday season approaching, ThoughtMatter wanted to create a new and unexpected gift to share with our friends and colleagues. Something inspired. Something in the spirit of the holidays. Something that reflects our collective personality but is still connected to the social and political climate of the present.
A fundamental part of the holidays is the spirit of welcoming friends and family into our homes for celebration. In recent years, some have juxtaposed this sentiment with inappropriate, loaded narratives about unwelcome immigration. There’s a tension and contradiction about that which reflect the underlying irrationality, even absurdity of our society—material mined by Dada artists like Marcel Duchamp some 100 years ago.
The theme of welcoming better became the driving force behind this year’s holiday gift. It occurred to us that we could, in Dada form, use an everyday object to get people thinking about these ideas. A doormat stood out as an ordinary object symbolic of the spirit of welcoming. And in the age of smartphones, cars and homes, why not embrace a smart mat—or ThoughtMat?
We experimented with different designs and materials, and we explored the integration of technology into a doormat. But what’s more Dada than a doormat that does nothing but, well, lay at the foot of a door? And so Marcel the ThoughtMat was born.
We received a wealth of positive feedback from our clients who were gifted Marcel. It certainly stood out in the pile of cards, gift baskets and wine bottles. Marcel the ThoughtMat was also featured in the The Drum and Adweek’s agency gift round-up.
