The assignment was to find an article and create an editorial illustration as an introductory spread. The article “We’ve Found 5000 Exoplanets and We Are Still Alone” from The Atlantic describes a scientific history of searching for other far away planets that could house extraterrestrial life, then explains that none has been found.

The illustrated editorial spread for this article draws attention to the astronaut close up that uses the majority of space on the spread, embodying humanity’s search and exploration into the galaxy and beyond. Reflected in the astronaut’s helmet is a small Earth and moon, emphasizing its loneliness as the sole planet known to host life. The typography is kept minimal and draws colors from the illustration for cohesion, however the word “alone” is bolded to further drive the point of the isolation of life in the universe- so far.
