The goal was to create a typography-driven animated opening sequence for a film or television series. I chose Patrick McHale's animated miniseries, “Over the Garden Wall.” The main challenges faced in the development and production of this project were evoking the tone and overall characterization of the show without relying on graphic or pictorial elements, aside from those directly related to the typography.

My title sequence investigates how the series handles its subject matter and characters and distills these into distinct and easily communicable indicators such as typeface, color, symbols, and atmosphere. Additionally, I used movement, speed, and transitions to support these characterizations and create a journey reflective of the journey around which the series’ plot is centered. To root the type more deeply within the environment and reflect the show’s heavy use of symbolism, I melded certain letterforms with emblematic elements from the show, such as autumn leaves, candy, and red thread.

My title sequence is an engaging reflection of the show’s main plot and themes without explicit use of the show’s imagery. The animation provides key information such as the cast, tone, and central themes in a way that invites intrigue without spoiling the show’s plot and content.
