We were tasked to create a data visualization that told a clear story and represented a set of data over time. We were encouraged to make the data multidimensional and were allowed to choose our own subject or data set to display.

I wanted to explore the growth of the Disney company and decided to focus on its film history and how it was impacted by different important events in the companies life. I cross-examined its filmography with important dates and events in the Disney company, the genre of movies released each year, and the number of academy awards won each year and for which movies. I wanted to make the data instantly recognizable and decided to brand all of the elements of the piece with a nostalgic 1990's Disney style. I used the mickey mouse symbol as the frame for the timeline and used the same color as the original animated castle logo sequence as the background color. I used muted pastel colors throughout the rest of the piece to complement the background and selected a professional but slightly whimsical serif typeface as the title.

The final product is a data visualization that's instantly recognizable as Disney from far away and layers new information and discoverable data the closer you examine it. It successfully shows the story of the Disney company and allows a viewer to discover personal insights.
