This was created in Typography II, and the assignment was to create a theatre poster for a randomly-distributed play. The particular play I was assigned was The Tempest by William Shakespeare.
I was inspired by the opening scene of The Tempest where Prospero is utilizing magic to control the intense storm that causes the shipwreck upon the island that he is on. I wanted the title of the play to be the main focus, and the typography to be expressive in the way that it would capture the effect of a dark and mystical storm. The letterforms are hand-rendered so that they are able to interact naturally with one another and create a cohesive unit that mimics the characteristics of a storm.
After completing multiple sketches of the hand lettered word, a finalized sketch was scanned into the computer and traced using the pen tool on Illustrator. The finalized computer rendering was placed into photoshop to add more storm-like effects. This was the final result.
