This is a barley field on a hillside in northern North Dakota, a field I have photographed every summer for the past 10 years in its various forms, including newly planted, planted with sun flowers, planted with barley, or fallow. Sometimes it's green. Sometimes gold. Sometimes barren.

For this particular shot I was rollerblading several miles away. I saw the storm clouds moving in over the lake where my husband and I own a cabin. I hurried to get my camera and drove to "my" hillside. I photographed it and as I drove away I saw the sun moving through the clouds. I turned around and went back as the sun swept across the barley field. It lasted only a few moments. Then the rain came.

In North Dakota, where I grew up, the weather is often a topic of conversation. It can be harsh, bold, dramatic. Even though I have photographed this hillside for 10 years, this is the most dramatic moment I have experienced there.
