Students were given the task to create, develop, and design a magazine prototype. It would be a sample publication that would act as a template as to how the rest of the magazine would be designed for full publication. The sample design consisted of twenty pages, within the twenty pages, students were responsible for designing the cover/back cover, table of contents, department pages, feature articles and filler pages. The theme of the magazine had to be travel/culture-related with an international element. Students were directed to choose an unusual and appealing topic that can be audience-based or special interest approach to travel or a culture aspect.

I started with word webs to help narrow my topics down until I found one that seemed to be unusual but hold a reader’s attention. The topic I chose was candy, and by doing research; I found out that candy is most popular in Switzerland. My editorial design became a Switzerland based magazine called Sot. Sot means sweet in Swiss. I then worked on my nameplate to develop a style for the magazine. From this I decided to go with a clean, modern and edgy approach to the editorial design and alas Sot, The Guilty Pleasure Magazine was born.

Sot will come out quarterly and focus on artists, bakers and candy chemist. The range is wide with candy installations for fashion shows, to candy packaging, to even candy photography. Ultimately, Sot Magazine is for a reader with an unforgivable sweet tooth. It is for those with a whimsical and creative mind. Sot lets the audience embrace the guilty pleasures in life. And above all else, Sot reminds you to keep life sweet.
