Assignment: Create a full page illustration for the Jeanne Marie Laskas New Yorker article about “a new generation of airships.”
Approach: For this project the class focused on the usage of blimps in today's time. Thinking in more concrete yet creative ways the class and I nailed down that the ships would be most effective as cargo ships, because of their size and ability to fly. With this approach I decided that my main concept was to show how blimps could deliver gigantic amounts of cargo to remote places. I decided to go with a more realistic approach and bring contrast to the blimp and the landscape. In doing so I created the blimp in 3D and painted the landscape. For the colors I used cold stale hues to give off the height of the mountains and used White for the blimp to go give a more futuristic feel to it.
Results: My main objective was to create a piece that was simple and easily readable to anyone who sees it. There are some things I could have done better of course, but from the classes response it seemed like I had done a great job. Everyone could clearly tell what I was going for and thought the rendering of the piece was pretty nice.
