I was assigned to recreate the book cover of Bret Easton Ellis' "American Psycho". Patrick Bateman, the main character in the book, is obsessed with his image. More importantly, fitting in with his fellow wall street colleagues. He finds it hard to blend in when he has an uncontrollable desire to murder. The book takes you into the mind of a sociopathic serial killer, desperately trying to blend in with the crowd. My goal for the redesign was to bring Bateman's personality, or lack there of, to life.
Perfectly spaced rows and columns of "squares" are on the front cover. The one square that is slightly askew represents Bateman, while the rest represent the people he surrounds himself with. Batemate's square is also cut out, showing you the red hard cover. This is meant to be an insight into the mind of the killer. The pages have been painted red which allude to the horror the reader will find within the book. Typographic inspiration is drawn from Bateman's business card.
Overall, I have received positive feedback from my professors and peers.
