Assignment:
Create a poster that advertises the Jude Buffum lecture to the Dallas Society of Visual Communications members. Consider secondary audiences including non-members who might be fans of his 8-bit illustration work.
Approach:
Jude is well known internationally for his 8-bit illustration style. As homage to that style we created a portrait of him using half inch, painted wooden blocks for use on this poster. Each block was hand cut, painted or stained and built by Josh and Chance.
The title New Game came from a collaboration between Josh and Jude based on the gaming subject matter of his 8-bit illustrations.
This approach was chosen as a way to push the expected 8-bit illustration and make it more. By giving the illustration depth and a hand made look through building it, we feel it pushed past the expected and added a layer of interest to the subject matter.
An introduction to his talk:
Designers that were classically trained in print have to be careful to not limit their career trajectory to a single path. Jude Buffum will speak about his start at a high profile design firm and how he went on to pursue personal projects while still maintaining his current career path to elevate himself to the next level.
