The aim of the project was to create a unique and representative accolade to honour the recipient of the prestigious Name of the Year title. The Name of the Year ceremony is one of the most media-covered events in Slovenia, while the title itself ranks among the most reputable honorary awards for those who distinguish themselves in the wider public opinion in Slovenia. It was conceived by Wave 202 (VAL 202), the most listened to radio programme within the national RTV (Radio and Television) network. It has traditionally, every year in December – for almost two decades – rounded off the year-round weekly and monthly voting of listeners to choose the most inspiring personality for achievements in science, sports, innovation or humanitarian activities.
The entire creative process was based on research and an experimental approach to visualising sound and radio waves. Our desire was to emphasise the name WAVE 202, the importance of radio as a medium, the award and its recipient. The award is uniquely designed by digitising and visualising the voice of the radio host and spoken words: »Name of The Year (2020) WAVE 202 is (recipient's name)«. This acoustic wave was reprogrammed, converted into a graphic transcript and transformed into radio waves via transparent acrylic glass. By choosing pure graphic elements and transparent acrylic, we also wanted to symbolically show the level of transparency in the selection of the Name of the Year and the wide reach of the radio medium to listeners. The personalisation adds significant value to the award, as the inclusion of the recipient's name essentially makes the award resonate. Thus, the graphic record is unique every time.
The design solution and the implementation of a representative and personalised award convinced the client to a further and broader cooperation.
