The Pantry is the in-house restaurant for The Schaller Studio boutique art hotel, part of the Art Series Hotel Group. The hotel brand evolves around the concept of living in an artist studio, with colourful and vibrant original artworks featured throughout the space in an informal and engaging format. To appeal to a wider local customer base beyond being a hotel restaurant, the venue was in need of its own identity, but also had to sit comfortably in the hotel experience. The restaurant menu is simple and has a strong local and seasonal focus, with a tasty range of mainly ready-made bites from local suppliers. Having branded The Schaller Studio hotel, the Art Series Hotel Group came to Toben to create this new restaurant identity, including naming.
Our approach was to extend on the concept of the artist's studio, but to give the restaurant it's own place and distinct visual identity in the narrative. 'The Pantry' concept is true to the menu, as well as having a place in the artist's studio. The strong black and white pattern was inspired by the cross patterns of old jam jar lids and traditional tea towels. The brush and drip execution gives the concept a unique visual and distinct identity. And the additional elements such as logo and illustrations further pays homage to the pantry shelves and quality home-made goods. The overall black and white identity stands out well in the busy art hotel environment, and creates a complementary contrast to its colourful art without breaking its narrative.
The Pantry has become a favorite with locals and Studio guests alike.
