2020 marks the centennial of the ratification of the 19th Amendment, granting women the right to vote in 1920. It was the first legislation for women’s voting rights. Not until the passage of the Voting Rights Act in 1965 were voting rights of all women protected and enforced.

Kelly Salchow MacArthur and Nancy Skolos spearheaded the AIGA Get Out the Vote: Empowering the Women’s Vote poster campaign, in partnership with the League of Women Voters, which invites AIGA members to design nonpartisan posters to commemorate the beginning of 100 years of women’s voting rights. This campaign aspires to not only support voter participation, but to also serve as a backdrop for dialogue and examination of the history of voting rights and women’s fight for equality.

Even in 2020, there are many ways that women are not considered, treated, or respected as equal to men in our society. This poster uses 100 equal signs (=) to represent each year since the ratification of the 19th Amendment. It was the beginning of a long journey towards equality that continues today.

Election day gives each citizen a voice, and an opportunity to be considered equal.

This is one of 65 core posters designed by invited women of design, to launch the initiative with inspirational work. The core posters will be included in several exhibitions across the United States in the months leading up to the 2020 presidential election. The posters are available for free download at aiga.org/vote, to be used in voter participation initiatives.
