I have a fascination with conspiracy theories and the way we as people cope with this idea of the unknown, leaving us in a state of limbo. For this publication, I wanted to uncover the mystery behind aviation disappearances through their conspiracy theories. Each chapter explains a historic aviation disappearance, presenting the reader with the official report, the media story and the believed conspiracy theory. After connecting all the dots, the reader can decide if they are a believer or a skeptic. The publication lives inside the Black Box packaging. The bright orange book cover is revealed through the die cut letters on the box that reads “Flight Recorder Do Not Open." Inside the packaging is a hidden compartment that reveals a circuit board, flight IDs and a flight roster booklet that corresponds with each story. The style of the publication combines collaged images and code like typography. Together these elements communicate the experience of a readers conducting their own investigation.
