This project is from the Advanced Typography course for juniors in the Visual Communication Design program. Students were asked to design a poster for any festival or conference. The festival could be real or fictitious. The goal of the project was to create a large poster that integrated type and image in a compelling way.

This poster promotes a fictitious concert with music from famous Pixar movies and the Japanese animation house Ghibli. The goal was to quickly communicate music using recognizable characters from both studios. After many variations, I ended up using two iconic characters (Buzz Lightyear and Totoro) to act as "conductors" on either end of the "stage/poster". The graphic lines reference sound waves, the look of an auditorium or stage and the very nature of performance in a darkened space. The type is gold to convey the one of a kind feel of this concert.

The graphic nature of the lines and the placement and combination of typefaces reinforced the idea of a concert. It's a wonderful surprise to get closer to the poster and see that the conductors are actually well known characters from each animation house.
