Illustrate the Langston Hughes poem "Catch" for the cover of Poetry magazine.
Big Boy came Carrying a mermaid On his shoulders And the mermaid Had her tail Curved Beneath his arm. Being a fisher boy, He’d found a fish To carry— Half fish, Half girl To marry
The illustration is an organic shape that contains and expresses the poem’s meaning, with an axolotl playing the part of the mermaid. A twist of sorts, implying that Big Boy got more than he bargained for.
The finished illustration incorporates the color palette of an Aaron Douglas painting...another project requirement. In order to learn about the brilliant Harlem Renaissance painter, muralist, and illustrator, and to lend a somber tone to the "cute" scenario and whimsical illustration style.
