After 9/11, congress passed the Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Act. An outcome of this legislation, intended to protect the American people, was also a serious threat to the American right to privacy through increasing surveillance of citizens. In an environment permeated with fear and suspicion, the sacrifice of fundamental rights for the sake of security becomes a unique form of self-inflicted terror and loss of freedom.
