The goal was to convey the grit and underbelly of the 1930’s Los Angeles setting while remaining beautiful, eye-catching and visually arresting. Instead of focusing on the context of the story, our primary focus was to establish a tone that well reflected the show and helped introduce audiences to a new iteration of an older property.

It was important to avoid common tropes and clichés associated with the noir crime genre, so this particular set-up helped establish a time and place in a natural and believable way. Lighting and treatment played an integral part in elevating the piece to a place of beauty while maintaining the gritty realism of the tone helping it to stay grounded.

Audiences responded very well to the key art and, as a direct result, HBO experienced one of the highest viewership for a premiering series in nearly two years. This made our client extremely happy with the result of the key art and the subsequent viewership it resulted in.
