UNICO NEXT is a new business venture under the UNICO brand of Welmo Inc., the next unicorn company in the Japanese nursing care and welfare industry. In Japan, where the declining birthrate and aging population are serious social problems, Welmo is developing artificial intelligence (AI) to help solve these problems.
UNICO is responsible for the field of child welfare, and UNICO NEXT, which is introduced in this project, is a school-age classroom that provides programming education consisting of a unique method to children with disabilities. At UNICO, they believe that children do not have disabilities, but rather that their disabilities are obstacles that prevent them from adjusting to their environment.
While no one in the world has seen the potential to harness the power of creativity in this field, Welmo believes in the power of design and positions it as a driver of solutions.
The UNICO NEXT Hakata School is the first step in our effort to create a world where these children and their families do not feel burdened, but have the happiness they take for granted. The goal of this project is to create a high-quality child welfare school for the children and their families, with the mission of "accelerate your talent (accelerate children’s talent)”.
In Hakata, the sixth largest city in Japan by population, one of the largest commercial facilities in the Kyushu region, Mitsui Shopping Park LaLaport Fukuoka, opened on April 25, 2022. UNICO NEXT Hakata School will be one of the tenants of LaLaport Fukuoka, and the addition of a child welfare school in a large-scale commercial facility is another rare initiative in the world.
The most important thing for us in this challenge was to " accelerate your talent (accelerate children’s talent)" in the support of children.
No one in the world had ever taken on this challenge before, and with no precedent to serve as a reference, the art director's creativity was greatly credited.
The entire brand building process was created from the art director's hand-drawn sketches, and these sketches became the North Star of the brand building process. The power of creativity to create something out of nothing was utilized to the fullest.
Welmo, the parent company, successfully raised 2.04 billion JPY in December 2021, bringing the total amount raised to 4.12 billion JPY since its establishment in 2013. This project contributed to one of the factors behind this success. All for the sake of their mission, “accelerate your talent (accelerate children’s talent)”.
