Design a series of book covers for three Jules Verne stories that will be released as a limited edition, collectors series. The publisher has requested that the design be typographically focused, but may include other graphic elements that communicate the theme of each story.
My process began with typographic experimentation using texture, new techniques, and typographic lock-ups. I chose to execute the covers in their original French title to honor the author and original publication and used a classical style lockup to draw on the Victorian era in which these were originally published. I also conveyed the theme of each book by creating a unique illustration included in the corners of each frame. This reveals what each book will involve, enticing the reader to turn the first page. All work is hand-drawn and original.
The elegant typographic treatment conveys the timelessness of these classic stories by Jules Verne. It would appeal to a variety of audiences, but most importantly, collectors of limited edition series. Typography and attention to detail play a role in making these book covers successful--elegant, yet playful. A limited color palette is also worth noting, as it is the identifying factor of each book, but is also what holds them together as a series.
