The brief was to create a poster promoting an audio studio where the defining capability is the deep musical knowledge and insight of the owner. The poster was inspired by a comment made by the owner that Beethoven, who grew progressively more deaf through the course of his life, wrote his final symphony (Ode to Joy) in a style and structure that suggests he could not have done so unless he was deaf.
The progressive disappearance of Beethoven's name is a metaphor for his loss of hearing. Yet, even as the letters fade away, a new and powerful sound emerges through the explosion of flowers. Two metaphors coincide to reveal a new truth.
The poster inspired questions within the studio and provoked interesting debate and discussion – exactly the response our client wished for.
