First Fridays is a monthly evening event at the Natural History Museum. There are bands in the mammal hall, and DJs in the lounge. Visitors geek out about science and history and L.A. culture, sip cocktails while they wait in line at food trucks. There are behind-the-scene tours, themed discussions, and pop-up performances.

The challenge is to reinvent the First Fridays "look" every year. Part concert, part hard science, it's a unique event that draws a diverse Los Angeles crowd - from 20-somethings who come for the bands and stay for the science, to the baby boomers who do the opposite.

This year's theme of "L.A. Invents" is all about the science of innovation, specifically here in Los Angeles. We leveraged schematic drawings from public domain patents along with scientific drawings to create original artworks that convey the messiness of invention and iteration, with the gestalt of science. Each month has its own sub-theme and key artwork: aerospace, sports, oil. Each month's key art has to both stand on its own, and relate to the artwork from previous months and hang together as a series.

The First Fridays 2018 season is ongoing, but attendance has been strong. Internal and external response to the artwork has been extremely positive, and it helps that all the staff members love to wear the t-shirt.
