We were tasked with branding an Ayurveda wellness tea. Ayurveda is the Indian art of holistic living and the oldest (5000 years old) medicine system in practice today. It reminds us that health is the balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body, mind, and spirit. Ayurvedic philosophy indicates that everything in the universe is made up of 5 elements —fire, air, water, earth, and space.
Matra means “an element (5 in number)” in Sanskrit. The logo pays homage to a Hamsa containing a hand (with 5 fingers representing the 5 elements) and a tea leaf instead of the “evil eye”. The Hamsa has a special position in India’s rich culture and has become one of their most sacred symbols. Indians call Hamsa, Humsa Hand. The five fingers in the hand of Hinduism represent the five elements of nature and the five energy centers of our body (chakra). It is often decorated with the “evil eye” which is thought to ward off any harm or danger and believed that the symbol is a sign of protection. We put a tea leaf in it’s place to symbolize the tea protecting the body. The Hamsa is meant to be displayed with the fingers facing down to offer the proper protection, bring luck and strength.
The packaging has been sold into a certain retail store across the U.S. (Can't reveal the name yet).
