For an "entrepreneur" project we were given the prompt to develop our own product for our brand. Since I have a passion for sports media and the NBA, I decided to tackle the age old debate. Who is the greatest player of all time? From barber shops to main stream media, it feels like the conversation is inescapable. Recognizing how an artist like Tyson Beck have corned the niche market of custom trading card design, I wanted to release my very own signature line of cards with my own hot take on the greatest debate in sports.
For my cards I wanted to create a set that was unified in style, but each individual card still stands out on its own. I used a black and white style and developed a photo treatment to create that unity and some texture. I then isolated a select few colors and to give each card some vibrance. I was also very selective with my image choices. I didn't want any of my compositions to feel similar, but rather keep the viewer engaged as they go through the set.
This project was well received by my professor, concept and design execution. I was also able to share this set with Tyson Beck, the artist who inspired this entire project. He praised the design of the cards and packaging, and that meant a lot since he is at the top of the sports trading card industry.
