Being a product of my environment, as a mother, a Virginian, and a tax payer, I have witnessed a true inequity in the distribution of governmental funding associated with programs to curb youth tobacco use versus subsidies provided to the tobacco industry.
A 6 year-old's upper body is juxtaposed with hanging dried tobacco leaves simultaneously simulating smoking ravaged lungs in the child. The composition loosely parodies the Marlboro cigarette box. The main text reads "Tobacco Votes" with the warning reading ”GENERAL WARNING: The tobacco industry invests millions of dollars in campaign contributions and direct lobbying to buy congressional votes. Ask your congressman to break the cycle of addiction to tobacco money and support measures to reduce the toll of tobacco on our children.”
