I wanted to express fashion in a unique way that was different from everybody else. I imagined the pictures being used in a high-fashion advertisement that has a Japanese location and shot in a way that no other fashion photographers from NY or Paris would think of.
I’ve been interested in taking fashion photos with a Dekotora (Japanese decorated truck). Although it may seem un-Japanese and rather violent with the neon-colors, somehow it felt like a modern Japanese scene. I asked my stylist to coordinate outfits that can match the impact of the scene. I also picked a simple lighting to make the most of the neon-colors. I made this work with a solid and vivid taste, partly intended to deny the current popular stance of using wide latitude and undertones to create artistry.I'm looking for the world’s reaction to my expression and the Japanese style, which is seemingly un-Japanese.
This project was a personal work just for Graphis, not for a client. The reactions from designers, producers and directors who I have worked with in other projects were excellent. I was able to express what I had originally hoped for and all members, including myself, who worked on this project, we're satisfied and proud of the results. But I would say it was a true success only if I win.
