Popular Science came to us to with multiple ideas for their Summer 2018 “Life and Death” issue, or more like “The Cycle of Life” issue. Once again we were honored to be able to collaborate with Thomas Payne and the whole Popular Science team to dream up ideas for various parts of the issue, one of them being section openers. We needed to show how life begins and ends--a seed being a natural choice for a beginning.
Approach
Following a plant from seed to germination, growth, death, and then rebirth became our metaphor. Thank you to Adam’s kindergarten teacher who taught him to sprout seeds 30+ years ago. He still remembers the instructions and they worked out beautifully.
Results
In the end, we were able to produce a series of images that brings the stages of a growing plant up close, providing a new lush, textural and intriguing view to it.
