Our client was producing a range of food service products for industry and were approached by a upscale grocery chain to produce a retail version for their customers. We had to rebrand the company to better suit a retail audience and design a packaging format that would take their whole range.
The products are all hand produced from quality raw and organic ingredients; which sets them apart from large industrial manufacturers. The packaging had to communicate this. It had to feel artisan in its own right. As the product was to sit in a variety of freezer cabinets, it had to function well either standing up or lying down, and the substrates had to work well in the environment. The carton had to carry ten different products, and yet be attractive enough to very choosy buyers. We chose a standard product carrier; a single colour core flute carton printed with the brand signature pattern, with high grade food stocks as the outer sleeves, which were all printed full colour. This all worked well in their production runs, and gave them flexibility in supply, as well as keeping the carefully produced, often delicate product intact.
The trial was huge success. After sighting the design, the supermarket chain ordered another four SKUs than was anticipated (so we went from six to ten in the design development). This has now given our client extra confidence to further tackle the high end grocery market, and have now sold into more chains. A by-product is their old food service clients
