Redesign of Sombra, an artisan mezcal from Oaxaca, Mexico made from Espadín agave. The name Sombra means shadow. The custom glass bottle has a smoky tint relating to its name and the process of cooking the agave hearts in the ground which produces a smoky flavor.
Approach
In Oaxacan churches, worshippers light small votive candles in glass cups called veladoras. The votives have multi-faceted sides and are popularly used as shot glasses for mezcal. The bottle is shaped with the same number of facets as the small veladoras. The labels are black with copper foil and ink relating to the copper still used for distillation. The Sombra palenque (distillery) uses many sustainable practices including making adobe bricks out of the agave waste fibers to use for building homes for those in need. The cork closures are also made from agave waste fibers.
Results
At this time, the design is new to market and figures are not available. The client, however, feels it is the best project he’s ever been involved with.
