Assignment: The project and its goals
Vince Frost’s passion for great design provides him with an impactful and highly effective platform to communicate his views on social issues that he feels strongly about. Gun violence in America continues to be a global debate as communities the world over demand change from a world superpower whose Constitution’s Second Amendment defends the people’s right to bear arms, a right that ‘shall not be infringed’ as the masses march again to the latest funeral farce. Vince Frost’s poster project was self-initiated in sadness and in mockery, in the face of absurdity. He hopes that it will add to the ground swell of dismay, heightening awareness of a rights tragedy that is ransomed by republican conservatism.
Approach: Creative process and solution
Vince Frost’s intuitive approach takes child-like language- ‘Bang Bang’ - satirized by the concept of game-playing and pairs this with bold typography. “How do you say “ban guns” evocatively and thoughtfully?” he asks. “I love the idea of being economical with words and how this translates through design,” Vince explains. “How do you start from a single word and remove a letter to effectively change the meaning but remain on message?” Vince’s solution is powerful through its sheer simplicity. Clever, comical, yet serious in tone – the palette choice of black and red talks to the stark reality of US gun laws – bloody death.
Results: Success of project and/or the client’s reaction
The Bang Bang poster project enjoyed only a small print run. Frost*collective used the work across its social media channels including Instagram, Facebook and company website as well as in marketing assets where appropriate. Frost*collective is currently putting together a Vince Frost poster exhibition in Sydney which will feature the Bang Bang design and the business is looking to launch an anti-gun poster initiative across the design industry globally with the objective of raising US awareness of international opinion on the need for change.
