This project allowed for the development of a hypothetical line of products to be found in the category of travel. The objective was to develop packaging for a line of products, a concept, a target audience, creation of a logotype, and a solution to a problem as well as it’s benefits.
My personal objective for this project was to create more functional packaging for a line of international wall adapters. The target audience are recent college graduates looking to travel the world and frequent business travelers. Thus, the product would have to be sold individually, collectively, and conveniently. In terms of design decisions, I wanted to create a product line with a clean, stylish, affordable, and modern approach, different from what I have seen for tech products in my field research.
The process began with the exploration of other travel products and styles and then a further, more specific exploration of wall-adapter packaging and the form of the product. Consequently I urged to create a package that considered both form and function. In my research I found that there are five different wall adapters worldwide that may be used in different regions, some overlapping. Thus, I was to create five individual packages and one parent package. Through several explorations and die-lines I concluded using a triangular prism would be most convenient for space-saving travel. Each individual adapter is packaged inside a prism that includes details of the region to be used and a band wrapping around the actual product for reference, if the box were to be disposed of. The parent package is a rigid carton intended to be re-used in storing the adapters when traveling. The compartment that holds the product is shelf-like and pulls out from the outer carrier, and similar to the individual package, has a band around each product for the purpose of not confusing the adapters. I began with a white design with one accent color. I soon realized, aside from the shape of the package, this resembled what already exists. I moved on to create a more, visually appealing design including a brown recyclable box with a white label print, an accent color, and a customized pattern using the letter forms of the word “Plugg” and travel icons.
The name Plugg was derived from the physicality of the product assets and an international accent integrated using the diacritic mark on the “u”. Essentially, Plugg’s packaging and design differs from what is currently on the shelves for wall adapters and poses competition for existing brands in terms of appeal and affordability. Plugg is the power solution for all travel essentials. Plugg offers compact design for easy portability and convenience.
