A few years ago, I concluded that with print publications offering fewer opportunities for artists to comment on political and societal affairs; and with social media platforms offering greater opportunities to communicate directly with an audience, I decided to start creating a series of online commentaries using a poster format.
In this case, the tag line was something I said to colleagues one evening in Washington DC when I organized more than 30 artists to go to Capital Hill to oppose the anti-copyright legislation known as the Orphan Works Bill. This was a proposed amendment to existing copyright law that would have orphaned all unregistered art. The image came separately on a different occasion, but I thought it expressed the tag line perfectly, so I married it to the text.
Published on my website and on my Facebook page a year or two ago, it's been widely shared and posted online by others as a commentary about the ongoing circus of American politics.
